The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), set out in Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 and part of the Fit for 55 package, represents an important step towards emission-free mobility within the European Union. This regulation sets specific requirements for hydrogen refueling stations to achieve a sustainable and efficient alternative fuels network.
What is the AFIR regulation?
The AFIR introduces mandatory targets for hydrogen refueling station deployment, to be achieved by 31 December 2030.
- Locations: Stations must be publicly accessible and located along the TEN-T core network, with a maximum distance of 200 km between stations. In addition, each Urban Node must contain a hydrogen refueling station, as defined by the European Commission. Check here if your project is located in an Urban Node: Urban Node locations.
- Minimum capacity: Each station must be able to supply at least 1,000 kg of hydrogen daily.
- Pressure requirements: Stations must be able to supply hydrogen at 700 bar (minimum), with 350 bar often added as an extra option as HDV is the focus.
- Standards and certification: Refueling stations must comply with: EN 17127:2020: Refueling algorithm, EN 17124:2022: Hydrogen quality, EN ISO 17268:2020: Connectors.
- Accessible payments: AFIR requires stations to support ad hoc payments via common payment methods, such as payment cards or contactless payments.
